"Items" is used here as a generic term for news stories, pictures, videos, audio snippets, links to other sites or whatever else members of the site want to contribute as content. You can also use the Items feature to keep an online journal or blog. Other people can comment on your items, but if the main reason you're posting something is to start a conversation, you might want to use the forum instead.
